China to Nearly Double Battery Storage Capacity by 2027 Under $35B Plan
najnowsze wiadomości o firmie China to Nearly Double Battery Storage Capacity by 2027 Under $35B Plan

Beijing — September 2025 — China has revealed an ambitious state-backed roadmap aimed at almost doubling its battery energy storage capacity from about 95 GW (installed by mid-2025) to 180 GW by 2027, with an estimated investment of 250 billion yuan (≈ US$35 billion)

Key Details

  • The plan was jointly released by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the energy regulator.

  • As of June 2025, China’s newly installed energy storage capacity (excluding pumped hydro) stood at ~95 GW.
  • The country had exceeded earlier targets: China’s 2025 goal for new energy storage (30 GW) was reached two years ahead of schedule.
  • Major domestic battery manufacturers such as BYD and CATL are expected to play leading roles in achieving this target.

Strategic & Industry Implications

  • This target underscores the importance China places on lithium-ion and other electrochemical storage technologies to support its growing renewables (solar & wind) capacity.

  • The policy push also includes upstream and downstream measures: improving battery manufacturing capacity, encouraging innovation, managing supply chains (key raw materials), and enhancing regulatory oversight.
  • For global battery markets, this expansion increases demand for critical materials (lithium, cobalt, nickel, etc.), and could further shift economies of scale in China’s favor.

Challenges & Considerations

  • While capacity goals are set, utilization of storage (how many hours per day the batteries are actually used) has been less than ideal in some installations. Reform of pricing and power market mechanisms may be needed to encourage higher usage.

  • Ensuring that manufacturing growth does not lead to overcapacity or environmental risks—emphasis will be on sustainable, green manufacturing and leaner, smarter factory practices.

China’s new energy storage roadmap aims to scale battery storage at a massive pace, positioning the country for stronger renewable grid integration, energy security, and international competitiveness. If achieved, this move will have major repercussions for global battery supply chains, investment flows, and emissions trajectories.
